PR Director Position Overview

 

 NOTE: "PR" in this document, is used in the broader sense, including public relations, social media, media relations, crisis communications, government relations, etc.

General Purpose

Meet Client demands in providing PR services and work, lead the PR team, serve as the Company voice for PR and participate in broader Company initiatives.

Position Summary

The PR Director (PRD) is responsible for leading, managing and expanding the Company's PR Department and PR Clients' work/relationships.  The PRD leads the development of ongoing PR strategy, work and relationships. The PRD leads and manages the Company's PR business and Client engagements, and manages associates that serve the Clients. The PRD is responsible for all aspects of PR relationships with Clients, including the health of the relationship, planning, execution of quality work, fiduciary responsibility, overall growth and successful deployment of Company resources. The PRD is required to employ a range of thinking and decision-making skills including solving and serving approaches to Client PR issues and initiatives. Essentially the lead project manager on many Client PR projects, the PRD must demonstrate an ability to develop tactical PR work, organize workload and manage workflow while leading Company associates. The PRD is expected to effectively develop and present the Company's decisions, recommendations, and PR product to a range of Client audiences. The PRD must be able to write clearly and persuasively. The position is responsible for overall Client satisfaction, quality of service, and on-time, on-budget completion of the Company's PR services. The PRD must be available for travel and is expected to work a minimum of 45 hours/week with longer hours as workload requires.

Essential Functions:

PR Leadership

  • Demonstrates confidence, authority and level-headed decision-making as the Company's leadership voice on PR
  • Stays abreast of PR trends, and actively communicates and makes application of these trends within the Company, within our Clients' businesses and within new business opportunities
  • Pro-actively works with new business team to grow PR business

 

Manage Client's Business

  • Demonstrates confidence, authority and level-headed decision-making as the Company's leadership voice on PR Clients' business, solving their problems and serving their needs
  • Develops knowledge and actively seeks current information about PR Clients' organizational structures, products, services, markets and distribution networks
  • Remains in touch with the Company's "day-to-day" business on behalf of PR Clients in order to be knowledgeable and conversant on key issues, competitive situations, industry trends and the projects assigned to the Company as well as to other communication partners
  • Uncovers business needs and objectives. Crafts strategies, identifies and implements projects to achieve Client goals
  • Creates and interprets effective analytics to support PR recommendations
  • Develops broad industry expertise
  • Generates new PR ideas to enhance Client performance
  • Proactively presents ways to add value to all Client-specified assignments and activities

 

Build & Grow Client Relationships

  • Continually develops and cultivates PR Client relationships while monitoring the "health" of each account
  • Encourages and provides input into PR Client reviews on a timely basis in order to gain feedback, and identify and address Client issues/concerns
  • Maintains each Client's respect and confidence as a trusted advisor and confidant by offering an eager and open ear, sound judgment, proven business acumen and a range of relevant approaches to various issues and opportunities
  • Develops multi-tiered Company-Client relationships
  • Builds trust, credibility, and encourages Client referrals

 

Fiduciary Responsibilities

  • Assumes and manages fiscal responsibility for Client PR budgets allocated to the Company
  • Monitors job costs and grows overall profitability
  • Works with Account Team to manage billing, forecasting, cancelled costs and post mortems for PR Clients
  • Enters daily record of billable time in accounting software
  • Assures that Estimate Requests (i.e. LOEs) and Revised Estimates (i.e. Change Orders) are completed for all PR jobs

 

Execution of Plans & Projects

  • Develops and executes PR plans and ensures the team follows approved plan
  • Develops strategies for and manages all project work that supports and ties to annual PR plans and overall brand positioning and key messaging
  • Oversees all project management and day-to-day activities for PR Clients
  • Engages PR Clients for input and approval at key stages of plans, creative strategies, concepts, copy, layouts, etc.
  • Works with new biz team to develop new Client proposals and participate in pitches as needed
